Last year we took it old school with Hack the 90s! Tamagotchi clones, MSN messenger revival, you name it - 2019's hackathon participants were tasked with developing software from the 90s.
Software Systems is a program in the School of Computing Science, based in SFU Surrey. Although a comprehensive program, Software Systems focuses more on the applied aspect of computer science. Some of the concepts taught are object-oriented programming, embedded systems and web-based information systems.
A hackathon is an event where programmers, engineers and designers collaborate intensively to create a project in a limited amount of time. In the hackathon, you will come up with an original idea together with your team, develop and present it to your peers and judges. A example "hack" could be a website, a game, a robot, or a mobile app that applies to the theme of the hackathon.

Everyone must have a group of 3-4 people. Teams can be premade, or made during the hackathon. Official Team Creation will take place during the hackathon, so that attendees who drop out or dont have groups can form or join a team.
No, all projects must be built from scratch.
Systems Hacks is a beginner-friendly hackathon and we welcome students of all levels. There will be mentors to help you out if you have any problems or questions.
Students of any education level are eligible to participate in System Hacks.
You can but will not be eligible for judging. Hackathons are a time to breed innovation and collaboration, and a great place to connect with other hackers. We want to encourage that with Systems Hacks!

Think of an example Idea/Solution. Imagine how you would build it during the event, and learn what would be necessary to acheive it. Mentors are available at the hackathon to teach and guide you, and the event is an opportunity to learn spontaneously and be creative!
Toiletries, laptop, chargers, power bars, water bottles, tupperware + utensils, and comfortable clothing. Please bring external materials that you might require, such as VR, arduinos + electronics, game controllers, etc.
